The plain truth is that you will not be able to get anywhere in the business world if you do not have effective written communication skills. To this end, there are three things that you can do to improve your written communications and ensure that you write in a professional, business-like manner when necessary.
Practice Writing To Make An Argument
Remember, that business communications essentially boils down to trying to convince people to buy things or ideas from you, and this requires the ability to be convincing and to make an effective argument for why your product or idea should be selected. Now, this does not mean to actually start an argument, but it does require you to learn how to write persuasively. And, the best way to do that is to simply practice. Learn how to boil down what it is that you want to say, and find the best, clearest way of saying it that presents your ideas or selling points in the most favorable light.
Always Make An Outline, And Do Your Research
One of the facts of business writing that many people do not like to hear is that no amount of acumen with the written word will be able to cover up the fact that you do not know what you are talking about, or that you have nothing to convey. Do your research, prepare and present all of the data, the facts and the selling points as clearly as possible. This is the heart of effective business writing.
Do Not Get Lost In Fancy Prose – Be As Focused And Plain As Possible
As an extension of the previous point, do not get lost in the bluster of HOW to write, concentrate instead on what it is you are writing and how best to present it in an efficient and effective way. Do not say in 50 words what can easily be conveyed in 10. In business as in life, time is money, and no one appreciates having theirs wasted. This means that you do not need to waste your time “building your vocabulary” or learning to avoid prepositional phrases. Just be direct, and you will be fine.
