Pregnancy and the Benefits of Chiropractic: An Option That Expecting Mothers Should Know

Image result for ChiropracticPregnancy and the miracle of birth are two of the most exciting phases a woman experiences. This is the most intimate time that a mother has with her child and it should be an enjoyable experience. However, pregnancy can take a toll on the body but unnecessary pain and discomfort can be avoided by utilizing an option that most pregnant women do not realize they have – Chiropractic care. Chiropractic care should be recommended for all expectant mothers. Chiropractic allows for a safe and less problematic pregnancy and limits pain and dysfunction during the birthing process. Through chiropractic care, the nervous system, which regulates all other functions of the body, is able to perform at its best, which results in better overall health for the mother and the baby.
As the baby grows, so does the mother. Growing at such a rapid rate may create stress in the back, particularly the spine and pelvis, along with the attaching ligaments, tendons, muscles and fascia. When these areas are stressed, they create subluxations. Subluxations are misalignments of the spine that compress nerves resulting in pain and dysfunction. This begins the degenerative process. The effect that this stress places on the mother results in abnormal changes in the body which can result in a number of symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, neck pain, low back pain, etc. Subluxations are created through tension, toxins and trauma. In many cases the mother may have been out of alignment prior to pregnancy with only minor complaints. With the additional weight inherent with pregnancy and changes associated with having a baby further complicate the issue. This is one of the reasons chiropractic care is so important.
During pregnancy it is important for the pelvis to be balanced. The pelvic region is the area undergoing a vast majority of changes due to the close proximity of the uterus to the pelvis. A balanced pelvis allows for better weight distribution, which decreases pain and muscle spasms due in part to one side pulling more than the other side. A balanced pelvis is wonderful for the baby as it allows the uterus to grow symmetrically affording the baby more room to move around in the uterus and increasing their comfort. A balanced pelvis results in an easier childbirth. An uneven uterus results in restricted movements for the baby, which may lead to a breech presentation because it is so difficult for the baby to move into their proper position, thus ultimately creating the need for more Cesarean Sections.
Chiropractic focuses on balancing the body and removing nerve pressure by adjusting the spine with either the hands or various instruments, thereby allowing you to perform at your best without the use of drugs or surgery. The body is a remarkable creation, which is capable of healing itself, provided there is no interference. The nervous system regulates every system in our body so it is important to keep it functioning properly.
Dr. Larry Webster developed a chiropractic technique specifically for pregnant mothers called “The Webster Technique”. The technique is used to correct subluxations mainly in the sacral region (an inverted triangular bone that attaches to the left and right illum bones to form the pelvis) to allow for better balance of the pelvis, ligaments and muscles to avoid the presentation of a breech position of the baby in the late third trimester. This allows for the best possible delivery and also has a high success rate. There are many chiropractors that are proficient in this technique.
Chiropractic care is excellent for expecting mothers because it helps to overcome the physical, mental, and emotional stress that occurs with pregnancy so that you can enjoy your baby at the most intimate part both of your lives. Enjoy your pregnancy. It’s a beautiful time that will always be remembered and the bundle of joy that arrives at the end of the process is the icing on the cake.
